Heart says England… Mind says Brazil…
Just as I start writing this piece, Germany has thrashed Costa Rica 4-2 in the World Cup Opener in Munich. If Steven Gerrards’ 90th minute Thunderbolt in the FA Cup Final was incredible, then Frings’ shot from 40 yards to score Germany’s fourth goal today was even better. 6 goals in a WC Opener is a record in itself and it gives us a sign of things to come in the next one month.
For the next 30 days, everybody is gonna eat, sleep and drink football. And I am no different. Somehow I don’t prefer watching league football even though I haven’t missed a WC match since France ‘98.
I jus can’t wait to see England take the field against Paraguay tomorrow. I really feel this is England’s best chance to win the World Cup. Their squad looks awesome on paper. Upfront Peter Crouch looks in ominous touch and Gerrard needs to carry his Liverpool form into the WC. Add to that Owen and Rooney (in case he is fit for later stages of the championship)… It makes for a great attack. Lampard and Beckham are raring to go. Terry, Ferdinand and Campbell make a solid defence. If only they deliver on the field, they will become a difficult proposition to overcome. And the good news for all English fans is that Lampard will be their first choice Penalty Taker this time and not David Bechkam!!!!
But somehow I feel Brazil is the logical favorite to retain the Cup. They have the players for the occasions; everybody in the team is a big match-winner in his own right. Any team with Ronaldo, Adriano, Kaka, Carlos and Cafu will fancy its chances. Add to that list, the World’s Greatest Contemporary Footballer Ronaldinho and you know why they are the most impressive outfit in the whole competition.
So looking forward to a month full of engrossing soccer. Hoping that ESPNSTAR would do a better job than what TEN Sports did last time around. Hey, Harsha Bhogle is the anchor and not John Dykes. Maybe ESPNSTAR wanted to give a Desi Touch to this telecast, which is expected to be watched by 150m people in India.
Anyways my slogan for the next 30 days would be - GO ENGLAND GO…..

I hate Eng and they r always a bit over-rated... anyway they have a pretty decent team.... my heart says France but mind says Brazil.... Just hope Henry plays for France like he does for Arsenal.... Holland is also pretty strong with a lot of youngsters... Btw Harsha Bhogle doesnt know a thing about football... his anchoring sucks.... Common bring on John Dykes. He is amazin
@Asif: Yeah Its true tht thr is so much hype around this english team.. And about Harsha Bhogle's Anchoring, we really don kno why he is in.. Though he wud ve spent the last couple of months doin his homework, learning about all the teams in the fray, I think Alan Wilkins would ve been better.. And yeah John Dykes is amazin.. Maybe he wil take over on popular request!!!
@Jillu: Hey Argentina seem to be very confident da.. Maybe a touch over-confident.. They ve named their eleven for the opener against Ivory Coast, a full 30 hours before the match and Lionel Messi is missin from the line-up!!
But still Eng WON!!!!!
Damn that cafu, I love to watch him play teams I hate, but hate to see him play teams I love. Alles fur Deutschland!
