The name’s Rahul, not Raul !!!
I was utterly disappointed with Spain’s showing against France yesterday. I believed they had the firepower to go all the way to the finals. Most of us thought so, didn’t we?? And Nostradamus only strengthened our belief. But France put up a professional display that reminded us of les bleus that won the WC in ‘98 and the Euro in 2000. For one, the refereeing in the match was top-class. The Assistant Referees were spot on and the main referee Roberto Rosetti of Italy did a commendable job. There were no unnecessary cards, Yellow and Red, unlike the other day when Ivanov Valentin of Russia made a mess of the Portugal Vs Holland match. It took Rosetti nearly 68 minutes to give his first Yellow. After this stellar performance, he will definitely fancy his chances of being at Berlin on July 9.
I must concede that Raul was a big letdown. I didn’t expect the birthday boy to start the match. But once he started, he was almost invisible on the pitch. He definitely wasn’t the same Raul that we are used to seeing at the Bernabeu. Maybe he is still haunted by the Euro 2000 loss to France in the Quarters when he missed a last minute penalty. And it didn’t come as a surprise when he was substituted less than 60 minutes into the match.
If Raul couldn’t create a sensation, the “Rahuls” have more than compensated for it. The focus of Indian Media in the last one month has been on FOUR different Rahuls – Each with a different last name.
Rahul Mahajan is definitely one of them. By now, everyone would be tired of hearing his name. Such is the impact the 24-hour news channels have on us. They bring to our drawing rooms, everything that happens in high profile families and it is no different in this case. Drug Snorting is definitely not among the virtues of BJP and this incident has almost certainly brought down the curtains on any political ambitions of Rahul.
If the last two months have been traumatic for Rahul Mahajan, it has been exactly the opposite for the most eligible bachelor in Indian Politics – Rahul Gandhi. On June 19th the torchbearer of the Nehru-Gandhi family turned 36 (Oh!! Its my Birthday too…). What made his birthday special was the resounding victory for Sonia in Rae Bareily. After all, he was her Campaign Manager. And guess what, as an after-effect of the Rae Bareily elections, the Congress Sycophants want Rahul to take up a much more responsible role in the AICC. The ground reality is that Rae Bareily and Amethi are Oases in a Desert for the Congress and the UP state elections of Feb ’07 will reiterate this fact.
Another Rahul who made the headlines is “The Wall” Dravid – On June 21st, he successfully completed his first decade in International Cricket. He is one cricketer who always puts the Team before Self, gives his best on the field and strives to be a perfectionist. Hope Dravid continues to serve Indian Cricket with even more success in the days to come.
“You cant beat a Bajaj” – You surely can’t. Rahul Bajaj has proved that yet again by winning the RS seat which fell vacant following the death of Pramod Mahajan. He contested as an independent and won with the support of NCP, Shiv Sena and the BJP. Interestingly Congress chose to oppose him. The Bajaj Family is (maybe was) closely related with the Congress. Rahul’s Grandfather Jamnalal Bajaj was a veteran Congressman and his father Kamalnayan Bajaj was a three time Congress MP. Still Rahul chose to break the tradition by seeking support from the so-called Communal Parties. All because according to him, he wanted to work for the poor in India. Will he succeed in his mission – Only time will tell.
